The Internet let out a gasp of surprise when Google and Samsung announced the signing of a 10-year "Global Patent License Agreement" that will undoubtedly aim to cut down on all the recent copyright lawsuits between different smartphone manufacturers of late.
According to Samsung's press release,
“This agreement with Google is highly significant for the technology industry,” said Dr. Seungho Ahn, the Head of Samsung’s Intellectual Property Center. “Samsung and Google are showing the rest of the industry that there is more to gain from cooperating than engaging in unnecessary patent disputes.”
Of course, it remains to be seen just how collaborative the two companies will be. This could really just be a law department agreement abolve all else. However, having said taht, it's worth keeping in mind that a global agreement such as this isn't limited to just the companies' smartphone sectors. Who knows, maybe this is the start of a great partnership to usher in new inovations and advancements. That's perhaps a little too hopeful, but it pays to have a little hope considering we're stuck with this partnership for the next decade.
