After six movies and multiple games, Lord of the Rings will now get its own TV series. The one who has been tasked to produce this long anticipated TV show is Amazon Studios. They bought the rights in November 2017 for 250 million dollars.
The expected budget for production of the entire series is over 1 billion dollars which makes it one of the most expensive shows in TV history. The story will not be about the movie trilogy, but will instead explore other aspects of Middle Earth. Peter Jackson (The direct of the origin trilogy) has received an open invitation to help out. There has been no cast announcements yet but the original Gandalf has expressed interest in reprising his role.
Amazon has only 2 years to get series up and running. So expect the series to be out on November 2019. If they fail, the rights will go to the next highest bidder.
